Starwind was the label under which Wellcraft, an American powerboat builder, sold its own sailboats during the 1980s. The division concentrated on small cabin boats for families and newcomers to sailing. At its centre stood the Starwind 19, drawn by Jim Taylor Yacht Designs and first built in 1982. Production later passed to Chrysler Marine and then to Spindrift One Designs, part of Rebel Industries. The boat is easy to recognise by its low coachroof, fractional sloop rig and a short ballasted stub keel that houses a centreboard. The hull is glassfibre, with wooden trim softening the interior.
Our model records hold a single design for the brand: the Starwind 19, a sailing boat of 5.73 metres with build years from 1989 to 1995. Those years belong to the later period, when the boat was no longer built by Wellcraft. The line does not reach into recent build years, so anyone sailing a Starwind 19 today handles a boat that is some three decades old. According to the source, the board raised leaves a draught of under half a metre, while with the board lowered the boat draws close to 1.4 metres. Below there is room for four, in the forward berth and on two settees, plus a small galley with a sink.
