Stavo; cover, cost and conditions
Stavo points to Stavoren, a small harbour town in Friesland on the IJsselmeer. The Van der Werf family, who began building boats near Drachten in 1795, run a yard there. Its modern history starts in 1918, when one of the brothers bought an old yard in Stavoren and began building in steel. For decades the yard turned out fishing boats and cargo vessels. In 1957 it looked to the leisure market and launched the Stavokruiser, a steel yacht for private owners. The yard later became known as Sturiër and still builds steel yachts in Stavoren today. A Stavokruiser is easy to place by its steel hull, typical of Dutch motor cruisers of the period.
Our model records list two designs, both classed as motor yachts. The Stavokruiser 900 measures 9 metres and is listed with build years from 1975 to 1982. The Stavo 750, at 7.5 metres the smaller boat, follows with build years from 1981 to 1988. Both lines ended in the eighties, so neither reaches the recent build years, and the youngest boats are now close to forty years old. The number in each name matches the length in centimetres, 900 for nine metres and 750 for seven and a half. Larger Stavokruisers such as the AK 1100 at about eleven metres appear on the used market but are not entered under this brand in our data.
Steel forgives knocks but not neglect. On an older Stavo, the places to check are where water lies: bilges, under the engine, along the chine and behind the lining in the forepeak. An ultrasonic thickness test of the hull plating tells more than any amount of fresh paint. Anodes, the stern tube and the rudder bearing deserve a look while the boat is on the hard. Boats used on inland waters and canals meet fresh water, which is kinder to steel than the sea, though locks and bridges leave their marks on the rubbing strakes. Older engines may well be sound, but spare parts can take time to find.
