Stealth Yachts; cover, cost and conditions

Stealth Yachts builds foil-assisted power catamarans in South Africa. The idea rests on the Hysucat principle developed by Professor Karl-Günter Hoppe at Stellenbosch University, in which a foil between the hulls lifts the boat partly clear of the water once it gets going. One test report describes the Stealth 540 rising a foot or two on its foils from about 17 knots, with far less hull left in the water. The 540, nicknamed the Flying Gurnard, was among the first boats fitted with Q-Speed propulsion, where the propeller runs half submerged and half in air. Its first trials took place off Cape Town.

Our model records list 15 designs, 14 power catamarans and one motorboat. The 400 series, just under twelve metres, appears as Ambulance, Dive, Escape, RUV and Shuttle, alongside the older Stealth 380 Dive. The 520 at 15.5 metres comes as the base model and as Patrol, RUV and Shuttle. The 540 at 16.6 metres is listed as Flybridge, Sport, Sport Black and Sport Fisher. The oldest entry is the STEALTH Sport 6.5 motorboat at 6.5 metres, built from 2001 to 2010, with the 540 Flybridge following from 2004. Twelve designs reach into the most recent build years; besides the Sport 6.5, the 380 Dive and the original 520 have ended. Names such as Ambulance, Patrol and Shuttle point to working roles.

A foil-assisted catamaran needs a buyer who looks underneath. The foil and its mountings take every knock from floating debris or a soft grounding, so check for repairs, cracks around the attachment points and any misalignment. Q-Speed surface drives are unusual and need a technician who knows them; ask for the service records. Two hulls mean two of everything below: engines, shafts, bilges and steering gear. The width of a catamaran makes berthing in crowded marinas a skill of its own and narrows the choice of lifting slings and yards. Work versions such as Patrol or Shuttle may have run long hours, and the engine log tells that story.

What this means for the cover

As the Stealth 400 Ambulance, Stealth 400 Dive,

Stealth 400 Escape by Stealth Yachts and 9 more series are still in production,

parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the Stealth 520, Stealth 380 Dive and STEALTH Sport 6.5 by Stealth Yachts series the market

value and the replacement cost often differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Stealth 400 Ambulance, Stealth 400 Dive,

Stealth 400 Escape by Stealth Yachts and further series:

On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,

and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.

For the STEALTH Sport 6.5 by Stealth Yachts series:

On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part.

Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
