Worth knowing

Stéphan; cover, cost and conditions

Stéphan was a boatyard in Concarneau, the fishing and boatbuilding port in southern Brittany. Its signature boat is the Mousquetaire, drawn in the 1960s by Jean-Jacques Herbulot. The Mousquetaire counts among the first French family cruisers with a fixed keel to be series built in polyester, which places it right at the moment when wooden hulls gave way to composite ones that were quicker to build and stood up better to damp and rot. You know one by its flush deck, fixed keel and low, stretched profile. Under the name Mousquetaire Club the design is still sailing along the French coast.

Our model records hold a single Stéphan design: the Mousquetaire sailing yacht, 6.48 metres long, built from 1967 to 1981. That is fifteen model years of one drawing, produced while French yards were turning glassfibre into a series product. Nothing from the yard reaches into recent build years, so every Mousquetaire on the market today is a used boat of at least four decades. At just under six and a half metres it sits between a large dinghy and a small cabin yacht: enough room for a family weekend, small enough for a road trailer and a modest berth.

An early polyester hull deserves a careful look before purchase. Check the keel bolts and the area where the keel meets the hull, look for osmosis blisters below the waterline and tap the deck for soft patches around fittings. Original rigging from the seventies has usually been replaced, and if it has not, it should be. Many owners trail the boat to the coast and launch from a slipway, so the trailer, its bearings and its lighting are part of the purchase. A well kept Mousquetaire is a forgiving, simple boat for learning coastal sailing.

Mousquetaire

Mousquetaire is a sailing yacht from Stéphan, built from 1967 to 1981.

What this means for the cover

For the Mousquetaire by Stéphan series there is no list price left.

That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,

and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.

For the Mousquetaire by Stéphan series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
