Northman is a Polish yacht builder founded in 1995. By its own account it grew out of a small family business, and today it builds sailing and motor yachts in three lines. The sailing yachts carry the name Maxus and run from 24 to 35 feet, the Northman motor yachts follow the style of a trawler, and the Nexus line adds motorboats and motor yachts. According to the yard, a Maxus 22 called Atlantic Puffin has sailed round the world twice, finishing the second voyage in 2018. The Maxus 35 from 2022 is, in the yard's words, its first sailing yacht designed and built for the ocean category. Anyone looking at a Northman boat therefore starts with the name: Maxus means sail, Northman and Nexus mean engine.

The oldest entries are the Northman Maxus 24 and the Maxus 33, both from 2005, and nine lines reach into the most recent build years. The smaller Maxus models can be towed behind a car, so the trailer, its brakes and the launching gear deserve as much attention as the boat itself. On a used Maxus, check the keel attachment, the rudder and its bearings, and the rig fittings, and ask how the boat was stored over the winter. A yacht that has made long passages, as the Atlantic Puffin did, will show it in its sails and running rigging. The trawler-style Northman motor yachts are made for unhurried cruising; engine hours, the cooling system and the shaft seals tell most of their story. Inland lakes with sandy shallows are kind to hulls, but repeated groundings still leave marks on keels and propellers.
