Worth knowing

Stoddart Bros Marine; cover, cost and conditions

Stoddart Bros Marine is tied to one boat: the Hood 23. It was drawn by the Australian yacht designer Warwick J. Hood, and the first examples came from his own Hood Boating Company. Most of the run was then built in Queensland by Max Stoddart. Hood himself counted it among his most influential designs, because it showed that a small cabin yacht could sail properly. Construction is glassfibre with a masthead sloop rig. A fin keel and spade rudder set it apart from the long-keeled boats still usual in Australia at the time. The design was revised in 1972 and exists in at least four versions, including pop-top and centreboard boats.

Our model records list one design: the Hood 23, a sailing yacht of 7.2 metres with build years from 1963 to 1989. That is more than a quarter of a century of production for a single model. The line does not reach into recent build years, and the youngest boats are now well over thirty years old. The source gives a beam of 2.4 metres and a draught of about 1.15 metres, less on some keel versions. An outboard of around 15 hp is enough to push her. According to the class association, plenty of these boats still sit on moorings in Sydney Harbour.

With a Hood 23 from the sixties or seventies, the build year says little about condition, so a careful survey pays off. Look at the keel bolts and the joint between fin and hull, and at the spade rudder bearings, which take a lot of strain. Pop-top versions need sound hinges and seals, centreboard boats a healthy pivot and case. Old glassfibre decks can be soft around fittings where water has crept into the core. The masthead rig is simple, but standing rigging of uncertain age is worth renewing. Many owners use the boat for day sailing and short coastal hops, and the class association is a good source of advice.

For the Hood 23 by Stoddart Bros Marine series there is no list price left.

That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,

For the Hood 23 by Stoddart Bros Marine series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
