Storm Yacht SA; cover, cost and conditions

Storm Yachts is a Polish yard that builds small sailing boats designed to travel by road. Its range began with small cruisers of 22 and 23 feet, and the Storm 26 extended it upwards. At 7.94 metres long and 2.55 metres wide, the 26 can still be towed without a special permit. A stainless steel lifting keel is standard and reduces the draught from 1.75 metres to 46 centimetres. The interior is laid out as one open space. The German magazine Yacht tested the boat on the Steinhuder Meer, a shallow lake near Hanover, and found it lively under gennaker even in light airs. The lifting keel is the feature that ties the range together.

Our model records list three designs: the Storm 22, recorded as a sailing boat at 6.58 metres from 2007, the Storm 23 at 6.9 metres from 2009 and the Storm 26 at 7.9 metres from 2010, both listed as yachts. All three continue into the most recent build years. The range is small and closely spaced, with a little over 1.3 metres between the smallest and the largest, and none reaches eight metres. A second-hand Storm is therefore always a boat from the last two decades or so; there are no older build years for this brand.

A lifting keel in stainless steel needs its own kind of care. The lifting mechanism, whether a winch, a tackle or a hydraulic ram, should run smoothly through its full travel, and the keel case should be checked for cracks and for wear where the keel bears on it. Trailer bearings, brakes and lights matter as much as the boat, given how often these Storms change waters. On a used boat, ask whether it has been raced, look at the condition of the gennaker gear and the bowsprit fitting, and check the transom and outboard bracket. Light weight and modest draught make the boats easy to launch at almost any slipway.

What this means for the cover

As the Storm 22, Storm 23 and Storm 26 by Storm Yacht SA series are still in production,

parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the Storm 22 by Storm Yacht SA series:

On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.

A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.

For the Storm 23, Storm 26 by Storm Yacht SA series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
