Stowaway Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Stowaway Boats makes folding dinghies: small sailing boats that collapse flat enough to travel in a car boot or sit on the deck of a yacht. The brand grew out of a parting of ways. Steve Rea and Mark Walters first built and sold Seahopper boats together, and their partnership eventually turned into two separate companies, Seahopper and Stowaway. Early Stowaways were close copies of the Seahopper designs, but later development gave them a character of their own. The Kontender goes back to a 1997 design drawn at Walters' request as a larger boat to sit alongside the Mirror. One detail gives a Stowaway away: a keel piece more than 13 centimetres wide, broader than on an original Seahopper.
Our model records list three designs, all classed as sailing boats and all built between 1998 and 2005: the Kontender, the Stowaway 20 and the Stowaway 24. The Kontender is the longest at 3.05 metres, the Stowaway 24 measures 2.4 metres and the Stowaway 20 just over two metres, so the whole range stays well under three and a half metres. None of them reaches into recent build years. According to the source, the three match the Seahopper Scamp, Lighter and Kondor in role. A smaller Stowaway 18 followed later but does not appear in our records. Anyone looking for a Stowaway today is shopping among second-hand boats from eight build years.
A folding boat lives a hard life of being assembled, sailed, taken apart and packed away. On a used example, work every hinge and joint through its full movement and look along the folding seams for wear, cracking or stiffness. Plywood panels deserve a close look at the edges, where water can creep into the layers if varnish or paint has worn through. Check that the thwarts, seats and transom still slot home firmly, since a loose fit makes the hull flex under sail. Count the rig parts too: mast sections, boom, rudder and daggerboard are easily lost between seasons. A boat stored dry and folded tends to age far better than one left assembled in the rain.
