Stratton Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Stratton Yachts traces back to Nick Stratton, a former Royal Air Force man who took up sailing in the service and went on to sell yachts on the west coast of Scotland. In 1975 he set up Nick Stratton Yachts in the premises of Arden Yachts on East King Street in Helensburgh, and in 1980 the business moved to Rhu Marina. The designer David Thomas drew a run of boats for him: the Intro, Hydro, Bolero, Toledo and Big Bolero. The Hydro made its name early, winning the Tomatin Trophy, today known as the Scottish Series, outright in 1977 with a perfect scoreline. His son Miles took charge of the firm in 2007.
Our model records hold two designs under this name: the Hydro, a sailing yacht of 8.5 metres, and the Intro, a smaller sailing boat of 6.63 metres. Both are listed with build years from 1974 to 1982, so neither line reaches the recent build years and the youngest boats are now more than four decades old. The records start in 1974, a year before the company was formally set up; we keep the dates as the model list gives them. The Bolero, Toledo and Big Bolero, also from the David Thomas partnership, are not entered under this brand in our data. The two boats are just under two metres apart in length, and both suit a small crew.
A forty-year-old cruiser-racer deserves a proper survey before purchase. Check the keel bolts and the hull around the keel stub for signs of hard groundings, and look for osmosis blisters below the waterline. Chainplates and the mast step carry the rig loads and tend to show their age first. Standing rigging of unknown age should be replaced, and old sails are often tired even when they look clean. Boats raced at club level may have been pushed hard, so ask about their regatta history. Deck fittings, hatches and windows should be watertight, as old sealant lets water into the deck core over the years.

Series by Stratton Yachts, build years and cover
Hydro is a sailing yacht from Stratton Yachts, built from 1974 to 1982.
Intro is a sailing boat from Stratton Yachts, built from 1974 to 1982.
For the Hydro and Intro by Stratton Yachts series there is no list price left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the Hydro by Stratton Yachts series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the Intro by Stratton Yachts series:
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.
A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
