Sud Composites; cover, cost and conditions
Sud Composites was a yard in Sète on the French Mediterranean coast. Its boat was the Switch 51, a sailing catamaran of some 51 feet from the VPLP design office, a name tied to many fast multihulls. According to the sources the yard built the Switch 51 from 2000 to 2007, after which Swiss Cat took the business over. The build was ambitious: hulls, bulkheads, bridgedeck nacelle, deck, coachroof and cockpit are glassfibre with vinylester resin over a foam core. The Switch 51 was meant as a long distance cruiser to live aboard that could still hold its own on a race course. Slim hulls and a low, stretched superstructure give it away.
Our model records list one design from the yard, the Switch 51 sailing catamaran at 15.4 metres, with build years from 1997 to 2009. That range is wider than the production period named in the sources, so when looking at a particular boat the build year should come from its papers. No line reaches into recent build years, which means every Switch 51 today is a used boat. At just over fifteen metres it belongs to the large cruising catamarans built for ocean crossings and life on board. Used examples turn up on both sides of the Atlantic.
Foam sandwich construction is light and stiff, but it needs a careful survey. Moisture in the core around deck fittings, chainplates and through hull fittings is the thing to look for, together with any repaired impact damage on the hulls. Rudder bearings, the bridgedeck underside where waves slam and the mast step deserve close attention on a boat that may have crossed oceans. Many Switch 51s have been fitted out for long passages, so solar panels, watermakers and electronics vary a lot from boat to boat. A full maintenance history matters more here than the year on the paperwork.

Series by Sud Composites, build years and cover
Switch 51 is a cabin catamaran from Sud Composites, built from 1997 to 2009.
For the Switch 51 by Sud Composites series the market value and the replacement cost often differ
widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the Switch 51 by Sud Composites series:
On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,
and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
