Worth knowing
Summit Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Summit Yachts was founded by George Carabetta and Barry Carroll. Carroll was already known for Carroll Marine, the yard behind the Mumm 30 and the Farr 40. The brand's first boat traces back to the King 40, a Mark Mills design built by King Marine in Argentina, which became the Summit 40 when it went into series production. It was conceived as a true dual-purpose cruiser-racer: quick enough for IRC racing, offshore or around the cans, yet with a cockpit and interior suited to relaxed family sailing. The design brief explains the look: high form stability, a swept spreader rig with non-overlapping jibs and masthead kites, and a lead bulb on a cast iron fin with a high aspect rudder.
Our model records list five designs: four sailing yachts and one motor yacht. The earliest is the Summit md35 from 2006 at 10.67 metres, followed by the Summit 40 from 2007 at 12.11 metres, the Summit 35 from 2009 at 10.7 metres and the Summit 45 from 2010 at 13.87 metres. All four sailing yachts are recorded up to 2020. The Summit 54 is filed as a motor yacht of 17.83 metres, listed from 2016, and is the only line that reaches the most recent build years. The sailing yachts therefore span just under 10.7 to just under 13.9 metres, the size where club racing and cruising meet.
A cruiser-racer that has been raced hard needs a careful look before purchase. Ask for the race history and the IRC certificates, check the keel bolts and the joint between fin and hull for signs of a grounding, and have the rig surveyed, paying attention to spreader roots, chainplates and the masthead fittings that carry the kites. Count the sail wardrobe: a racing inventory wears out faster than cruising canvas, and tired sails change the boat more than anything else. Deck gear such as winches, clutches and tracks takes heavy loads on these boats and wants regular servicing. A well-kept example still offers what the brief promised: speed on Saturday, comfort on Sunday.

Series by Summit Yachts, build years and cover
Summit 54 is a motor yacht from Summit Yachts, built since 2016.
Summit 35 is a sailing yacht from Summit Yachts, built from 2009 to 2020.
Also a sailing yacht, built from 2007 to 2020.
Also a sailing yacht, built from 2010 to 2020.
Summit md35 is a sailing yacht from Summit Yachts, built from 2006 to 2020.
As the Summit 54 by Summit Yachts series is still in production,
parts are available and repair costs are predictable.
Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
For the Summit 35, Summit 40, Summit 45 by Summit Yachts and 1 more series the market value and
the replacement cost often differ widely.
An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
For the Summit 54 by Summit Yachts series:
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value.
Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
For the Summit 35, Summit 40, Summit 45 by Summit Yachts and further series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
