Sun Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Sun Yachts Ltd. was a British yard in Essex that built small cabin sailing boats in glassfibre. The range was drawn by Arthur C. Howard, the designer also behind the Leisure 17. The names follow a pattern that grows with the boat: Sunspot at 15 feet, Sunstar at 18 feet, Sunray at 21 feet and, above them, the Sunflair at 27 feet. The Sunstar 18 is a masthead sloop on twin keels, intended for coastal and sheltered waters. Twin keels let a boat sit upright when the tide goes out, which suits the shallow creeks and drying moorings of the English east coast. Reference listings give 1977 as the first build year of the Sunstar, while our model records reach further back.
Our model records list three designs, all classed as sailing boats: the Sunspot 15, the Sunstar 18 and the Sunray 21. The Sunspot and Sunstar are listed for the build years 1967 to 1981, the Sunray for 1968 to 1984. None reaches into recent build years. The lengths rise in clear steps: 4.65 metres for the Sunspot 15, 5.57 metres for the Sunstar 18 and 6.32 metres for the Sunray 21, the largest boat in our records. The 27-foot Sunflair belonged to the yard's range but does not appear in our list. All three recorded designs stay under 6.5 metres, small cruisers that can be moved by trailer and were built with a cabin for short passages.
These are now boats of forty years and more, and age shows in predictable places. On twin-keelers the keel roots take the strain every time the boat dries out, so look for weeping, cracks in the gelcoat around the joints and signs of earlier repairs. Check the keel bolts if they can be reached, and the hull for osmosis blisters after a season afloat. Deck fittings, chainplates and the mast step on small boats of this period are worth inspecting for movement and water ingress into any core. Original sails and running rigging will often have been replaced, or should be. A sound trailer adds a great deal to a boat of this size.
