Worth knowing
Sunconcept; cover, cost and conditions
Sunconcept, also written Sun Concept, builds its boats in Olhão on the Algarve, close to Faro in southern Portugal. The brand was set up in 2015 to put solar powered boats into series production, both for private owners and for commercial operators. Before the catamaran came the Sunsailer 7.0, a seven metre electric boat. The CAT 12.0 followed as a twelve metre power catamaran with electric drive fed by solar cells on the roof. The layout is deliberate: two slim hulls mean little drag, and a broad roof gives plenty of room for panels. That flat solar roof over the whole deck is also how you recognise the boat.
Our model records list one design from the yard, the CAT 12.0 Cruise power catamaran at 11.9 metres, with build years from 2017 to 2023. Nothing reaches into the most recent build years. The CAT 12.0 came in several versions: the Cruise is meant for owners, with a cabin in each hull and an enclosed main deck holding galley, saloon and dining area. Alongside it there was a Lounge version and a professional version that takes up to 42 people, for instance for excursion trips. The catamaran is built for coastal cruising and sheltered waters, where it moves quietly and without exhaust.
An electric boat is checked differently from a diesel one. On a used CAT 12.0 the state of the battery bank comes first: its age, its capacity compared with new and the charging history, ideally read from the battery management system. Solar panels should be inspected for cracks, delamination and corroded connectors, and the electric motors and controllers for moisture. The hulls and the joint between the bridgedeck and the hulls deserve the usual survey. Owners in Portugal and Spain often use the boat for day trips along the coast, so a record of how it was berthed and charged tells a lot.
