Supercat Marine; cover, cost and conditions

Supercat Marine builds power catamarans in South Africa, on a smallholding just inland of Port Alfred in the Eastern Cape. Dennis Schultz founded the business; his sons Neil and Clinton now run it, with their father on hand as an adviser. The boats ride on two slim hulls in displacement mode, cutting through the water rather than climbing onto the plane. They are built first and foremost for offshore fishing, on day trips into the seas off the South African coast. A Supercat is recognisable by its narrow twin hulls, a wheelhouse forward and an open fishing deck behind it, which on the latest Sliver 29 sits on the same level as the wheelhouse floor.

Our model records list two Supercat designs, both power catamarans and both entered from 2018. The Supercat Sliver 29 measures 8.9 metres and the Supercat 38 Sport Custom 11.7 metres. Both lines reach into the most recent build years. The Sliver 29 itself goes back further than our entries: according to a South African boat test, the first one went into production early in 2007 with twin 40 hp four-strokes. A reworked version was tested in January 2022 with twin 60 hp outboards and a top speed of about 21 knots. The two designs are 2.8 metres apart in length and share the slender twin-hull layout.

A displacement catamaran trades top speed for a steady ride, which is why range and fuel planning matter more than raw power. Twin outboards mean twin service records: on a used boat, check both engines, the steering linkage and the fuel system, and compare the hours on port and starboard. Fishing boats lead hard lives, so look closely at rod holders, hatches and the deck around them for cracks or water ingress. Saltwater use also calls for a careful look at wiring, switch panels and the electronics in the wheelhouse. Both hulls deserve an inspection along the keel line, where a catamaran takes the knocks when it is brought ashore or trailered.

What this means for the cover

As the Supercat 38 Sport Custom and Supercat Sliver 29 by Supercat Marine series are still in

production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the Supercat 38 Sport Custom, Supercat Sliver 29 by Supercat Marine series:

On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,

and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
