Swallow Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Swallow Yachts, listed in our data as Swallow Boats, was founded in 1995 by the naval architect Nick Newland. His son Matt Newland joined in 2004 and broadened the range considerably. Growing demand led to a new workshop in West Wales on Cardigan Bay in 2008, and the brand was relaunched in 2015. The boats pair traditional looks with modern kit: water ballast so they tow easily, a carbon fibre mast and boom, and a rig that goes up quickly at the slipway. The Bay Cruisers carry that technology under the lines of a classic small cruiser.
Our model records contain 20 entries: 14 open sailing boats, five sailing yachts and one pedal boat, the Winsome Pedal Boat. The Storm 17 appears twice, and the Storm 23 is listed once as a dinghy and once as a yacht. The oldest entries are the two Storm 17s from 2000. The open boats include the Kittiwake, at 3.48 metres the smallest of all, the Trouper 12, Storm Petrel, Osprey, Storm 15 and 19, the Cardigan Bay Lugger, the SeaRaider and the BayRaider 17 and 20. Five designs reach the most recent build years: the Bay Cruiser 23 and 26, BayRaider 20, Bay Raider Expedition and Coast 250. At 8.64 metres the Bay Cruiser 26 is the largest boat of the brand.
Water ballast makes these boats light on the trailer, but the tanks, valves and seals deserve a look on any used example: a slow leak or a stiff valve changes how the boat sails. Carbon spars are light and strong, yet worth inspecting for impact damage where they rest on crutches during towing. Many owners camp aboard on raids and coastal trips, so cushions, a cockpit tent and the trailer itself are part of the package. Beaching is part of the fun with these shallow boats, which means the keel band and rudder blade often show the wear first.

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the Swallow Yachts BayRaider 20, Swallow Yachts Bay Raider Expedition,
BayRaider 17 by Swallow Boats and further series:
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.
A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
