Insuring Swarbrick Brothers: cover and premium

Swarbrick Brothers was an Australian boatbuilding business named after the Swarbrick family. The Spacesailer range was drawn by Kim Swarbrick, a naval architect from Western Australia, and the Spacesailer 27 came out of the seventies as a glassfibre yacht. The idea was to combine generous room below with proper racing ability on a modest length. The 27 has a liveaboard layout with up to six berths, a dinette, sink, icebox and marine toilet, and full headroom in most of the cabin; a 15 hp inboard diesel moves her under power. She races well with four crew and most comfortably with six. The type is still an active class in Western Australia, among others at the South of Perth Yacht Club, and two of them have sailed around the world.

Our model records list four designs, all sailing yachts from the Spacesailer range. The oldest is the Spacesailer 27, recorded from 1970 to 1993, and at 8.23 metres it is also the largest. The Spacesailer 22 follows from 1971 and runs to 1992 at 6.8 metres. The Spacesailer 24, at 7.23 metres, is listed for 1972 to 1983, and the small Spacesailer 18, at 5.5 metres, for 1976 to 1983. None of the lines reaches the recent build years; the youngest boats date from the early nineties, so every Spacesailer afloat today is more than thirty years old.

With hulls of this age, the condition of the individual boat counts for far more than the model name. On a used Spacesailer, check the deck for soft spots around fittings and stanchion bases, look at the keel bolts and the hull to keel joint, and ask when the standing rigging was last replaced. Older glassfibre can show osmosis blisters, so a lift-out and a moisture reading are worth arranging. The smaller 18 and 22 are often trailed, which puts the trailer, the winch and the launching ramp into the picture as well. The 27 has shown that a well-kept example can still race in club fleets and take on long passages, so a good one is a sound base for both.
