Swede Hergla Yachts; cover, cost and conditions

Swede Hergla Yachts was a North African offshoot of the Swedish Swede yachts. The company was set up in Hergla near Sousse in Tunisia, drawn there, according to the source, by lower wages than in Sweden and by the warm, dry climate. Behind it stood Olof Hildebrand, who had developed the Swede 55, together with a local Tunisian businessman, and the partnership later broke down. The boat with the fullest record from Hergla is the Super Swede 53, drawn by Peter Norlin from Hildebrand's ideas. She moved away from the light displacement of the Swede 55, carried a tall fractional rig with a powerful sail plan and was built as a sandwich hull, offered with a traditional raked transom or with a modern stern.

Our model records list four designs: three sailing yachts and one sailing catamaran. The Swede 37, at 11.03 metres, starts in 1981 and the other three in 1982, and all four end in 1989. Next to the Super Swede 53 at 16.3 metres stands the even larger Super Swede 65 at 19.8 metres, the longest yacht of the brand. The catamaran is the Flying Swede 38 at 11.4 metres. None of the lines continues into later years, so the whole range belongs to the eighties and every boat is now more than thirty-five years old.

Sandwich hulls from the eighties need a careful survey. On a used Super Swede or Swede 37, check the core for moisture around deck fittings, chainplates and the keel area, since water that has crept into the core spreads unseen. A tall fractional rig puts high loads on mast, spreaders and runners, so the age of the standing rigging matters as much as the hull. On the Flying Swede 38 the bridgedeck, the joints between hulls and beams and both rudders deserve a close look. Original parts and drawings from a yard of this kind are rarely easy to find, so an owner's own records add real value to the boat.

What this means for the cover

For the Flying Swede 38, Super Swede 53,

Super Swede 65 by Swede Hergla Yachts and 1 more series there is no list price left.

That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,

and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.

For the Flying Swede 38 by Swede Hergla Yachts series:

On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,

and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.

For the Super Swede 53, Super Swede 65, Swede 37 by Swede Hergla Yachts series:

On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:

a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,

and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
