Sydney Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Sydney Yachts takes its name from where it began. The boats were developed with the design office Murray Burns Dovell, which worked from the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club at Newport, north of Sydney. The starting point was the Sydney 40, drawn for the Admiral's Cup. Around 1999 the team turned it into the slightly smaller Sydney 38, a one design for Australian conditions that also had to work for twilight racing and family sailing. The name survived changes of ownership and, in 2009, the liquidation of the then builder Azzura Marine in Nowra. Since 2013 the yachts have been built in Croatia at the AD Boats yard.
Our model records hold ten designs, all sailing yachts. The oldest entries are the Sydney 36 S from 1992 and the Sydney 40, built from 1995 to 2002. Six lines reach into the most recent build years: the Sydney 32 OD and 38 OD, the two one designs, the Sydney 39 CR and 47 CR, and the GTS37 and GTS43, both from 2009. Besides the Sydney 40, the Sydney 38 ended in 2010, the 36 S in 2011 and the 36 CR in 2012. The smallest design is the Sydney 32 OD at 9.7 metres, the largest the Sydney 47 CR at 14.3 metres. Eight designs measure eleven metres or more.
A boat that has raced hard tells its story in the details. On a used Sydney check the keel attachment and the floors around it, especially after any grounding, as well as the rudder bearings and the mast step. Racing sails wear quickly, so ask how many seasons the main and headsails have done and whether a cruising set comes with the boat. Deck hardware, winches and running rigging see heavy loads on a one design and should be serviced. Many owners mix club racing with coastal cruising, so look at whether the interior has been kept in use or stripped for weight.
