Synergy Marine; cover, cost and conditions
Synergy Marine is a dinghy builder based in Waldringfield, Suffolk, and has been at work since 2010. Its output is racing dinghies from established classes: the International OK Dinghy, the International Cadet for young sailors and the National 12 in its own version called the Dead Cat Bounce. In 2021 Synergy became the official builder of the Lark, introducing a fresh variation on the existing hull shape. Founder Simon Cox has been involved with the Lark since the late 1980s. A Synergy boat is recognised less by a house style than by the class rules it follows. Customers can order a bare hull, a kit to fit out themselves or a boat ready to race.
Our model records list three designs, all classed as sailing boats: the International Cadet, the International OK Dinghy and the Lark. All three are listed from 2018 and run into the most recent build years. The Cadet is the smallest at 3.22 metres, the OK Dinghy measures four metres and the Lark 4.06 metres. Between them they span three stages of a racing life: a two-person boat for children and teenagers, a single-handed boat with one sail, and the Lark as a two-person dinghy with three sails and a symmetric spinnaker, where hull, mast and boom are strictly one-design. All three are small and light enough to travel on a trolley or road trailer to the club and to open meetings.
Racing dinghies get handled a lot, and that is where wear shows first. On a used boat, look at the hull where it rests on the trolley, at the centreboard case for cracks and leaks, and at the transom around the rudder fittings. Check the mast foot, the shroud plates and the spinnaker gear on a Lark, and run every control line to see that blocks and cleats still work freely. Sails are a major part of the value: on the Lark sailors may choose their sailmaker, so ask which suits come with the boat and how many races they have done. A fitted canvas and a sound trolley protect the hull between events.
