Triton-Ltd; cover, cost and conditions

Triton-Ltd is a company from St Petersburg in Russia, founded in 1991. It makes inflatable craft for water touring, mainly catamarans and kayaks for rivers and lakes. Its best known design is the Triton-2 catamaran, built for river trips of different difficulty grades and for competitions in tourist multisport. According to the maker, its shape has barely changed since 1992, and it has been paddled on hard rivers in the Himalayas, the Pamirs, the Tian Shan and the Altai. The catamarans float on two inflatable tubes rather than rigid hulls. The Nerpa-2 kayak is described by the maker as light, compactly packed and quick to assemble, which suits trips that start with a long walk to the water.

Our model records hold eleven designs, every one of them listed for the build years 2001 to 2008: seven catamarans and four inflatables. The catamarans are the Argut, Blik, Briz, Mono, Tajfun, Triton 2 and Veter. The Tajfun is the longest boat in the list at six metres; the Briz and the Triton 2 measure four metres, the Blik 4.5, the Mono and the Veter five, the Argut 5.2. Among the inflatables are the Nerpa 1 at three metres, the Nerpa 2 at four and the two rafts, Raft Triton-460 and Raft Triton-550, at 4.6 and 5.5 metres. No line in our records runs into recent build years; all entries stop at 2008. Six of the eleven designs stay under five metres.

Inflatable craft live or die by their tubes. Before buying a used Triton, inflate every chamber and leave it overnight: a tube that goes soft points to a leaking valve or a tired seam. Look closely at the areas that drag over rocks and gravel, since abrasion on the underside is the typical wear on river boats. The frame joints and fittings deserve a check for bends and cracks after hard runs. Dry the fabric fully before packing it away, and store it out of strong sunlight and frost. A boat from 2008 can still be perfectly usable if it was looked after this way, and the seller's account of where it was paddled tells you a lot.

What this means for the cover

For the Argut, Blik, Briz by Triton-Ltd and 8 more series the market value and the replacement

cost often differ widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Argut, Blik, Briz by Triton-Ltd and further series:

Open catamarans are beached and trailed, so most damage happens ashore and in transit,

not on the water.

For the Nerpa 1, Nerpa 2, Raft Triton-460 by Triton-Ltd and further series:

Even without an engine the rule holds: a tear from impact or vandalism is covered,

UV ageing is wear.
