Vaan Yachts works out of Hellevoetsluis, close to Rotterdam. Igor Kluin and Nienke van Klooster founded the yard in 2018 with one aim in mind: cruising catamarans with as small an environmental footprint as possible. The hulls are built only from recycled and then refined aluminium, a material that can be melted down again in full at the end of a boat's life. The decks are laid with FSC-certified cork and the upholstery uses recycled fabrics. Propulsion is electric; the R4, for example, carries two motors of 10 or 15 kW. A Vaan stands out through its metal hulls, a rare choice among production catamarans, and through an open interior layout.

Galvanic corrosion is the main enemy, so anodes, the isolation of through-hulls and the shore power connection deserve regular checks, and copper-based antifouling has no place on the bottom. Electric propulsion shifts attention away from diesel servicing towards batteries, cabling and the charging system; on a used boat, ask for the battery history and a capacity test. Cork decks are pleasant underfoot but want cleaning with mild products rather than harsh chemicals. Rigging on a cruising cat works hard on long passages, so the age of the standing rigging matters when buying.
