Viknes Bat og Service AB; cover, cost and conditions

Viknes is a Norwegian yard founded in 1988 by Jan Inge Sivertsen, who wanted comfortable boats that could handle calm water and rough weather alike, for work as well as leisure. The yard's history names the Viknes 770 Combi as its first model. In June 2000 a fire destroyed most of the production facilities along with the boats under construction, and new premises were up and running fairly quickly. In 2011 Viknes took over Skilsø, a builder whose roots go back to 1919, when Nils Roland started building boats at the southern tip of the island of Tromøy. Skilsø built in wood until the late seventies and had begun experimenting with polyester in the sixties. Since the takeover, production has been based in Arendal and Bergen.

Our model records list 16 designs, twelve carrying the Viknes name and four the Skilso name. Fifteen are entered as motor yachts and the Viknes 8 as a motorboat. The oldest entry is the Viknes 900 Combi, built from 1993 to 2003, with the 880 and the 1030 following in 1998. Nine lines run into the most recent build years: the Viknes 8, 930, 1030, 1030 SB, 1080 and 1080 SB and the Skilso 35 Panorama, 39 Fly and 39 Panorama. Lengths range from 7.7 metres for the Viknes 770 Combi to 11.9 metres for both Skilso 39 versions. Four designs stay under nine metres, nine measure ten metres or more. The Skilso entries start in 2013, after the takeover.

Boats like these spend long hours under engine, so the service history of the diesel says more than the age of the hull. On a used Viknes or Skilso it is worth checking the shaft seal, the cooling circuit and the engine mounts, and having a surveyor take moisture readings on the polyester hull. The large windows on Panorama and Fly versions deserve a look at their seals, since small leaks tend to show first in the headlining. A flybridge adds weight and windage up high, which owners notice when berthing in a crosswind. Boats from the late nineties are still common on the second-hand market and can be sound buys when the paperwork is complete.
