Windelo Catamaran; cover, cost and conditions
Windelo is a French catamaran yard in Canet-en-Roussillon on the Mediterranean coast near Perpignan. The Windelo 50 was drawn together with the naval architects Christophe Barreau and Frédéric Neuman. The yard builds in its own way: a foam sandwich whose core is made from recycled plastic bottles, laminated with basalt fibre rather than glass. Propulsion is electric, with batteries charged by solar panels and by hydrogeneration under sail. The number in each name gives the length in feet.
Seven Windelo models appear in our records, all sailing catamarans. Three are versions of the Windelo 50, Adventure, Sport and Yachting, each 15.24 metres long. Three more belong to the 16.46 metre Windelo 54: the base boat plus the Adventure and Yachting versions. The Windelo 53.2 Sport, at 16.21 metres, is listed from 2016 to 2020. The 50 Adventure, 50 Yachting and 53.2 Sport start in 2016, the 50 Sport and 54 in 2017, the other two in 2018, and six lines reach the latest model years.
With electric drive and big battery banks, shore power at the berth and a sunny spot matter more than a fuel dock. These boats are built for long passages and months at anchor, so a careful check of the battery system, the solar array and the hydrogenerators belongs to every refit.
