Windsport International; cover, cost and conditions

Windsport International works from Mylor Harbour near Falmouth in Cornwall and is the company behind the Sprint 15 beach catamaran; since 2012 it has also held the worldwide licence for the Dart 18. The Sprint 15 began life as a 1979 design by Rodney March, the same designer who drew the Olympic Tornado. It was first built as the Dart 15 by Panthercraft at Penryn, only a few miles from Mylor. In 2005 production moved to Collins Fibreglass in South Africa, and from 2005 to 2022 the class sailed as the Sprint 15. On 1 January 2023 it went back to its original name, Dart 15. Slim keel-less hulls, a trampoline and a compact rig make it easy to recognise on any beach.

Our model records list one Windsport design, the Sprint 15 Sport sailing catamaran, entered from build year 2018 and running into the most recent build years, at 4.5 metres. The class figures give 4.54 metres overall and a beam of 2.13 metres, with a 10.19 square metre mainsail and a 2.10 square metre jib. Sport refers to the single-handed set-up with main, jib and trapeze; the Unarig version carries the mainsail alone. One or two people sail it, and the hulls sit on a beach trolley that rides on an ordinary road trailer.

A beach cat lives a hard life on sand and shingle. When looking at a used Sprint 15, turn it over or lift each hull and check the keel strips for wear from dragging, look for soft spots in the decks, and inspect rudder stocks, pintles and the trampoline lacing. The shrouds and forestay deserve a close look, as does the mast base. Rinsing with fresh water after each sail keeps the blocks and trapeze gear working. Many owners trail their boats to club racing and events, so the trolley, the road trailer and its lights matter almost as much as the boat itself.

Series by Windsport International, build years and cover

Sprint 15 Sport

Sprint 15 Sport is a cabin catamaran from Windsport International, built since 2018.

What this means for the cover

As the Sprint 15 Sport by Windsport International series is still in production,

parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the Sprint 15 Sport by Windsport International series:

On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,

and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
