Zygal Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Zygal Boats was an English yard in Whitstable on the Kent coast. Through the seventies and into the eighties it turned out small glassfibre sailing boats, among them the Limbo 6.6 pocket cruiser and the Condor beach catamaran. Andrew Stewart drew the Limbo around 1975 as a small, quick coastal cruiser, and a British broker puts production at about 130 boats, plus a smaller run of the larger Limbo 9.9. The Condor was a 1969 design by John Mazzotti, and Zygal boats carry a builder's plate naming the yard and Whitstable. A Limbo gives itself away by its balsa cored hull and deck and its drop keel in shaped cast iron.
Our model records list two boats from the yard. The Condor is an open sports catamaran 5 metres long, recorded from 1971 to 1978. The Limbo 6.6 is a small sailing yacht of 6.6 metres, recorded from 1976 to 1983, offered with a fixed keel as an alternative to the drop keel. Between them the two designs span twelve build years and two very different ways of sailing: the fast beach cat on one side, the small cabin cruiser for coast and inland water on the other. Even the youngest of these boats is now well over forty years old.
Age is the main thing to weigh when looking at a used Zygal. On a Limbo, a moisture meter around the deck fittings and the keel box tells you whether water has reached the balsa core, and the lifting gear of the drop keel, its pivot and the cast iron foil itself should be inspected for wear and rust. A Condor needs a look at the hull joints, the beams and the trampoline, and owners report that the centreboard casings can leak. Rigging and sails are often original or of unknown age, so budget time for a proper check. Both boats suit shallow estuaries, lakes and sheltered coastal waters, where a lifting keel or a beachable hull is a real advantage.

Series by Zygal Boats, build years and cover
Limbo 6.6 is a sailing yacht from Zygal Boats, built from 1976 to 1983.
Condor is an open catamaran from Zygal Boats, built from 1971 to 1978.
For the Limbo 6.6 and Condor by Zygal Boats series there is no list price left.
That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it,
and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
For the Limbo 6.6 by Zygal Boats series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For the Condor by Zygal Boats series: Open catamarans are beached and trailed,
so most damage happens ashore and in transit, not on the water.
