The gulf lies between the Corinth Canal, Cape Sounion and Hydra, and Attica and Aegina shelter it, so the meltemi arrives softened, usually four to five on the Beaufort scale. Traffic weighs heavier than wind here: ferries and freighters run close together off Piraeus, and a traffic separation scheme with a security zone at its northern end sits between Aegina and the Attica shore. Anchoring is often over sand with seagrass, where holding is poor.

Berths, season and winter storage
The season runs from April to October, with May, June and September the kindest weeks. Berths sit in the middle band: town quays on the islands stay cheap, the marinas outside Athens cost a good deal more. Boats winter at Kilada on the Argolic Gulf, at Lavrion and beside the basin at Alimos. Check on the Corinth Canal before planning a passage through it; it was shut from October 2025 to June 2026 for slope works.
What this means for your policy
The area falls under the cruising range for Greece and the Aegean. Two questions for your own contract: does it still apply while the boat winters ashore in a yard you do not own, and how does it treat a grounding that follows an anchor dragging in seagrass? If you carry on around the Peloponnese, clarify what is asked of crew and equipment. Keep the ICC aboard.
