Boat insurance for The Solent
The Solent is a tidal area first and foremost. The stream through the narrows at Hurst runs at about four knots on springs, and in the Needles Channel wind against tide builds a short, steep sea. The Bramble Bank sits in the middle of it, a shifting sandbank that uncovers at low water springs. Then there is the traffic: ferries cross constantly, and ships over 150 metres carry a prohibited zone of 1000 metres ahead that small craft must stay out of.

Berths, season and winter storage
Sailing goes on all year, with the Hamble winter series running from October to the end of November. Berths are in the top price band: the Hamble and Cowes are among the dearest in the country, and rates fall the further east you go. Boats stay afloat through the winter and the Hamble yards lift out on request. Check warps and chafe before the autumn gales, because boats work on their lines in the stream.

The Solent falls under the cruising range for the British Isles. Two questions are worth putting to your policy: does it answer for grounding and the tow that follows, the way it happens on a bank that dries, and does the range reach across the Channel to the French coast for a weekend in Cherbourg?
