40 Grados Sur; cover, cost and conditions

40 Grados Sur is a boatyard in San Fernando, just outside Buenos Aires. It was founded by Guillermo Castro, known as Memo, a professional sailor who trained with North Sails Argentina and later ran his own yard, where an Open 30 and a 42 foot trawler were among the boats built. Since 2010 the Antares catamarans have been built at 40 Grados Sur, each one to order. They are meant for crossing oceans. A few features set them apart from most cruising cats of their size: shaft drive instead of saildrives, a fully enclosed cockpit and an optional hybrid drive. The yard works in the range between 12 and 15 metres.

Our model records hold one design from 40 Grados Sur: the Antares 44 GT, a 13.6 metre sailing catamaran. It is listed from build year 2015 and runs into the most recent model years. The trade press dates the GT version to a 2019 update in which the yard redesigned the cockpit; our records also file earlier hulls under the same name. A trade directory mentions the 44i and 44 GS variants as well as the larger Antares 46, none of which appear separately in our data. Since every boat is built to order, two Antares of the same year may differ noticeably in equipment and drive train, so each hull has to be judged on its own.

A catamaran built for ocean passages collects equipment, and on a used Antares that kit deserves as much attention as the hulls. Watermaker, solar panels, batteries, autopilot and rig should come with service records. The shaft drive asks for a look at stern glands, cutless bearings and alignment, jobs that differ from the saildrive seals found on many other cats. The enclosed cockpit makes life in cold or wet latitudes far easier, but its windows and seals want regular checks. Many of these boats have crossed oceans, so a full survey with the boat out of the water, including bridgedeck and rudders, is time well spent.

Series by 40 Grados Sur, build years and cover

Antares 44 GT

Antares 44 GT is a cabin catamaran from 40 Grados Sur, built since 2015.

What this means for the cover

As the Antares 44 GT by 40 Grados Sur series is still in production,

parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the Antares 44 GT by 40 Grados Sur series:

On catamarans the bridgedeck between the hulls is the sensitive part,

and the berth belongs in the application: double width often means a mooring rather than a marina.
