Action Craft; cover, cost and conditions
Action Craft builds its boats in Cape Coral on Florida's Gulf coast. The first two hulls came off a racing mould in 1981, and from 1983 the yard switched from wood to an all fibreglass build with a PVC foam core. The focus has always been flats and bay boats, shallow running skiffs for mangrove shorelines and grass flats. The signature is the Qui-Dry hull, short for quiet and dry, shaped to stop water slap while the boat is poled across the flat and to keep the crew dry on the run home. The first two digits of the four digit model numbers come close to the length in feet.
Our model records list 15 Action Craft boats, all of them motorboats. Build years begin in 2018, and eight lines are recorded right up to the latest model years. Four models carry the FlatsMaster name, three Coastal Bay, two FlyFisher, two FlatsPro and two Bay, alongside the 20 Hybrid Bay and the 1720 Gen III. Lengths run from the 4.86 metre 1622 FlyFisher to the 7.26 metre 24 Bay. Ten models stay under six metres and five sit between 6.14 and 7.26 metres.
These are trailer boats first and foremost. Most live on a trailer or in a shed and see the water through a ramp, so a sound trailer, good bearings and a fresh water flush after every trip matter as much as the hull. The small FlyFisher and FlatsPro skiffs are for skinny water and calm days, while the Coastal Bay models handle more chop in open bays.
