Airboat West is based in Embudo, New Mexico, in the Pilar area along the Rio Grande, and is owned by Billy Miller, who also runs raft trips on the river. Helping with rescues after Hurricane Katrina showed him what airboats can do in flooded country, and he went on to design a rescue airboat of his own: a low centre of gravity, more room for people and a roll bar meant to survive a rollover. That boat, the Wave Buggy, was drawn in 3D design software with advice from engineers who had worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory, and it carries up to 15 people. Any airboat is easy to recognise by the big caged propeller above the stern pushing a flat hull across the water.
