Aluma Marine; cover, cost and conditions

Aluma Marine is based in Harvey, in the New Orleans area of Louisiana, and builds heavy-duty vessels in aluminium and steel: utility workboats, passenger vessels and special-purpose craft for commercial and military use. The Vigilant line is the yard's fire and rescue series. Its hull is all-welded from marine-grade aluminium, and a foam collar runs around the boat to keep it stable in changing weather and sea states. Depending on the job, the boats are fitted with pumps, monitors and, if required, foam equipment. A Vigilant is recognised by that collar and by the plain, working layout of a service boat rather than a leisure deck.

Our model records list four designs, all filed as motorboats and all from the Vigilant line: the Aluma Vigilant 25, 28, 30 and 32. The numbers give the approximate length in feet. The 25 measures 7.77 metres, the 28 comes to 8.68 metres, the 30 to 9.29 metres and the 32, the largest, to 9.9 metres. All four are listed from build year 2018 and continue into the most recent build years. The builder names 25, 28 and 30 feet as standard sizes with larger versions beyond them; in our records the range stops just short of ten metres.

Welded aluminium is tough and light, but it brings its own care routine. Galvanic corrosion is the main enemy, so anodes, the isolation of stainless fittings and the earthing of the electrical system should be checked regularly, especially in salt water. Welds deserve a close look for cracks around high-stress points such as the transom and the collar mounts. The foam collar itself can suffer abrasion along a quay wall and should be inspected for cuts and loose fastenings. A boat that has served a fire or rescue department will often have many engine hours, so ask for the service log, the pump maintenance records and the history of any hull repairs.
