Alumax Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Alumax builds aluminium boats at a yard in Meppel in the Netherlands. The hulls are made by hand, and by the yard's own account it does not turn out standard production boats but shapes each one around its job, its requirements and its waters. Alongside leisure boats the yard builds firefighting and patrol boats, rescue craft, workboats, survey vessels and boats for port authorities. One example is the Worker 41, a workboat with a firefighting pump and twin diesel engines. Alumax boats are easy to recognise by their aluminium hulls and by the line names Bullit, Bull, Punter, Worker and Werkboot, and on most models the number in the name gives the length in centimetres.
Our model records list 29 designs, all of them motorboats and all reaching into the most recent build years; most start in 2017, a few in 2018. The Bullit is the largest line with eleven versions from 4 to 7.2 metres, available with an outboard, an inboard or with the E suffix. Next come five Worker, three Punter, three Werkboot, two Bull, two Sportfisher and two The Next models plus the Alumax 500 Jon. Six designs carry the letter E in their name. Thirteen designs stay under six metres, the smallest being the Bullit 400 E at four metres. Three boats measure 8.5 metres or more: the Worker 850, the Worker 33 at ten metres and the Worker 41 at 12.5 metres.
Aluminium shrugs off knocks from quays, rocks and boat ramps far better than a gelcoat finish, which is why it is popular for tenders and working craft. Its weak point is galvanic corrosion: stainless fittings, a poorly isolated engine or shore power without a galvanic isolator can eat into the hull, so anodes and wiring belong on every annual checklist. A used Bullit or Punter should be inspected for dents along the keel, cracks near welds and the condition of the floor. Boats that have been used for work or fishing often carry extra fittings and holes, and each of them should be sealed. On the inboard versions, the engine hours and the shaft seal are worth checking as well.
