American Marine Sports; cover, cost and conditions

American Marine Sports is based in Groveland, Florida, west of Orlando, and builds fishing boats under three names. Shearwater stands for bay boats and hybrid models, Sterling for flats boats and Blackwood for offshore boats. The company addresses its boats squarely to anglers and to those who head out to open water. A bay boat is an open console boat with shallow draft for lagoons, estuaries and inshore water. A flats boat is built shallower still, so that it can run and be poled across knee-deep sand and grass flats. An offshore boat is meant for the run beyond the coastline. The models are easy to place by their names: the Shearwater carry numbers with suffixes such as FS, LTZ, LTD or Carolina, the Sterling letters such as TS, XS and TR.

Our model records list 13 designs, all motorboats, all from build year 2018 and all running into the most recent build years. Eight belong to the Shearwater line: the 23 FS and 23 LTZ at 6.85 metres, the 25 FS and 25 LTD at 7.46 metres, the 260 Carolina at 7.82 metres, the 270 Carolina Flare and 270 Carolina Open at 8.18 metres each, and the Shearwater X22 Hybrid at 6.6 metres. The Sterling line has four, from the Sterling TR 7 at 5.18 metres, the smallest boat of the brand, through the 180 TS and 200 XS to the 220 XS at 6.6 metres. The Blackwood is the largest at 8.33 metres. Ten of the 13 stay under eight metres, two under six.

These are working fishing boats, and they show their use. On a used bay or flats boat, look at the transom and the jack plate mounting, since a heavy outboard on a shallow hull puts real load there. Check the livewell pumps and plumbing, the trolling motor mount on the bow and the wiring behind the console, where salt and spray find their way in. Hulls that have been poled and run hard over shallow flats can show gelcoat wear along the keel, and a look underneath on the trailer tells a lot. Most of these boats travel to the water on a road trailer, so bearings, brakes and the winch are part of the inspection too, along with the service record of the outboard.
