Angus Rowboats; cover, cost and conditions
Angus Rowboats sells kits and plans for rowing boats drawn by designer Colin Angus. The designs have been proven on long trips: an Expedition Rowboat was rowed round Vancouver Island, and the Rowcruiser has carried home builders from Port Townsend to Ketchikan in the Race to Alaska. The kits are now produced and shipped by Chesapeake Light Craft. Slim hulls with sliding seats are the common thread. The Rowcruiser adds a raised foredeck with a weathertight space to sleep in, and its sailing version gains outriggers that turn it into a small trimaran. The Oxford Wherry is trimmed in mahogany and cedar.
Our model records list six designs, all from 2018 and all still present in the most recent build years. The classification is uneven: the Expedition Rowboat, Oxford Wherry and Rowcruiser appear as other boats, the Sailing Rowcruiser as a trimaran, the Cambridge Racer without a type, and the Bumblebee Sailboat as a motorboat, although the designer describes it as a sailing boat for children aged two to five. Lengths are recorded for only two entries: 1.39 metres for the Bumblebee Sailboat and 5.7 metres for the Sailing Rowcruiser. The designer quotes 18 feet for the Expedition Rowboat, 19 feet for both Rowcruiser versions, just under 16 feet for the Oxford Wherry and just over 23 feet for the Cambridge Racer shell.
A home-built boat is only as good as its build. When buying a used Angus design, ask who built it and how, then look at the epoxy fillets and glass tape at the seams, the varnish or paint over any bare wood, and soft spots where water may have crept in around fittings. Sliding seat tracks, riggers and oarlocks take real loads and should be firm. On the Sailing Rowcruiser, check the outrigger beams, their joints to the hull and the mast step. Boats this light usually travel on a car roof or a small trailer, so look for chafe marks from straps and rollers.
