Arctic Cat is based in Thief River Falls, Minnesota, and is known above all for snowmobiles, with all-terrain vehicles added from 1996. The present company was formed in 1983 as Arctco after its predecessor, Arctic Enterprises, had gone bankrupt in 1981; Edgar Hetteen was among those behind the new start. In 1993 Arctic Cat moved into personal watercraft under its own Tigershark brand and left that market again in 1999 after sales had fallen. Tigershark machines were meant to be light, sporty and affordable. Over seven years some 20 models appeared on two hull forms, the original Tigershark hull up to 1997 and the TS hull of 1998 and 1999, in lengths of eight to ten feet, all with liquid-cooled two-stroke twins or triples.

Nothing reaches into recent years, as production ended when the maker left the market. Sources on the brand place the TS 770 on the TS hull with the model years 1998 and 1999, while our records give a wider span, so the year on the papers of an individual craft is what counts. The TS 770 uses a 768 cc two-stroke twin of around 80 horsepower, and its dry weight is given as roughly 187 kilograms. A longer TS 770L with more power was offered alongside. A Tigershark bought today is a machine from the late nineties, and two-stroke engines of that age reward a careful look. Compression on both cylinders, the state of the fuel lines and the oil injection, and the condition of the jet pump and wear ring tell a lot about how the craft has been kept. Hull and deck joints should be checked for cracks, as should the ride plate area that takes the knocks of beaching and trailering. Spare parts for a brand that ended in 1999 are not always easy to find, so a craft that comes with spares and a service history has a clear advantage. Most owners trailer their craft to the water, which makes a sound trailer part of the package.
