Arteran builds its boats on Hiiumaa, an island off the Estonian Baltic coast, a place where shipbuilding has a long tradition. The company set out to revive that tradition with power catamarans: boats on two slender hulls that are meant to run quietly and economically on moderate power. The group's first project was the ArtCat 46, drawn by Kurt Hughes Sailing Designs, a design office for multihulls. When the boat was presented, the yard announced plans to add larger catamarans of up to around 70 feet. The ArtCat is easy to recognise by its wide bridgedeck with a flybridge spanning both hulls, with the two slender hulls beneath it.
Our model records hold one Arteran design: the Artcat 46 Power, a motor catamaran of 14.02 metres listed for the build years 2011 to 2015, so no line reaches into recent years. According to the trade press it carries two Steyr diesels of about 280 horsepower each; the yard quoted 22 knots as cruising speed and a little over 26 knots flat out. Three interior layouts were offered: three cabins, two doubles with a single, or a large owner's cabin with a smaller guest cabin. The flybridge seats ten, with a wet bar and a second helm station. The yard described the boat as a cruising catamaran with good seakeeping for a broad range of owners. Smaller or larger Arteran models do not appear in our records.
A power catamaran of this size has two of everything below the waterline: two engines, two shafts or drives, two sets of seacocks and two hulls to survey. A buyer of a used ArtCat 46 should have both engines checked with their hours and service records and look closely at the bridgedeck underside, where waves can slam in a short sea. Because only a small series was built between 2011 and 2015, parts specific to the boat are easiest to trace through the builder's documentation. The wide platform makes the boat stable at anchor and comfortable for longer stays aboard, and many owners use it as a floating home for summer cruising along the coast.
