Axis Wake Research belongs to Malibu Boats and shares its parent's base in Loudon, Tennessee. Malibu announced the new brand in November 2008, and the first boats reached dealers from January 2009. Axis was set up as a separate brand for entry-level wakeboard boats, with its own identity alongside Malibu. The boats are built to throw a big wake behind the stern for wakeboarders and wake surfers. As with most wake boats, you know them by the tower above the cockpit where the towline is fixed, by the wide stern with its large swim platform and by the open seating that wraps around the cockpit. Model names are short: a letter for the line and a number that points to the length.

Our model records list five designs, all motorboats, and all of them run into the most recent build years. The first to appear are the Axis A24 at 7.44 metres and the Axis T23 at 7.14 metres, both from 2018. The Axis T220 at 6.68 metres and the Axis T250 at 7.62 metres joined in 2019, followed in 2020 by the Axis T 235, which matches the T23 at 7.14 metres. The spread is tight: just under a metre separates the smallest and largest boat, and all five sit between 6.7 and 7.6 metres. The names belong to two lines, A and T, and the numbers follow the rough length in feet, from 22 feet on the T220 to 25 feet on the T250.

A wake boat works hard. Ballast tanks, pumps and wake shaping systems need to be checked every season, and a ballast bag or tank that leaks can leave water where it does not belong. The tower takes heavy loads from the towline, so its mounts and bolts deserve a regular look. Inboard engines on lakes run long hours at low and medium speed, which makes the service log and the condition of the cooling system worth studying. On a used Axis it pays to look at the hull bottom for marks from trailer rollers and shallow launch ramps, at the upholstery, which spends summers in the sun, and at the sound system. Rinsing and draining after each outing keeps the boat in good order.
