Befoil; cover, cost and conditions

Befoil has been based in Lorient in Brittany since 2017. The company grew out of Voilavion, a research project built on Benjamin Magnard's idea for a boat that flies on hydrofoils, and its start was backed by the Brittany region, the public bank BPI and Mer Invest. It makes one boat, the Befoil 16, a 16-foot catamaran whose specification was worked out with the naval architects VPLP. What sets her apart are the self-regulating T-foils and two load-bearing rudders that lift her clear of the water from around eight to ten knots, depending on the version. The first hulls were rotomoulded polyethylene, made with Erplast; the lighter Sport version moved to glassfibre hulls from the Spanish yard Mestral Marine Works. The target is private owners and sailing schools who want to learn foiling without a racing background.

Our model records hold one Befoil design: the Befoil 16 at 4.87 metres, listed from build year 2017 and still running into the most recent build years. The list therefore spans the whole life of the company so far. Our records make no distinction between the original boat with its plastic hulls and the lighter, stiffer Befoil 16 Sport; both appear under the same name. Beam varies between 2.50 and 4.30 metres depending on the set-up, and top speed is given as up to 20 knots. When buying, it pays to note the exact version and build year from the paperwork, as hull material and weight differ noticeably between the two.

A foiling catamaran of this size lives on its trolley and on the beach. Before every session the T-foils and both rudders deserve a close look, because nicks and cracks along the leading edges change how the boat flies. Rinse the foil cases, pins and hardware with fresh water after a day in salt water. Learners capsize, and a mast that digs into the sand or a foil that touches bottom near the shore is part of the learning curve. On a used boat, check the hull joints and the foil wells for stress marks, ask which version is on offer, the early rotomoulded hull or the lighter Sport, and look at the age of the sails. A sailing school boat will usually have worked harder than one from a private owner.

Series by Befoil, build years and cover

Befoil 16

Befoil 16 is an open catamaran from Befoil, built since 2017.

What this means for the cover

As the Befoil 16 by Befoil series is still in production,

parts are available and repairs are predictable.

Still, set the value at replacement cost, including sails, rigging or gear you bought later.

For the Befoil 16 by Befoil series: Open catamarans are beached and trailed,

so most damage happens ashore and in transit, not on the water.
