Patrone is a Ligurian yard on the Riviera di Ponente. In 1922 Giuseppe Patrone set up as a boatbuilder in Ceriale, in the province of Savona, building fishing gozzi by hand, rowed and sailed in the Ligurian manner. In 1984 Pier Michele and Ornella Moreno took the yard over, which explains the company name today, and brought in new materials, technology and design. Over the decades the yard has built cutters, dinghies, gozzi, sailing boats, yachts and work boats, from a 2.5 metre pram to motor yachts of more than 18 metres, in wood or composite. Today it sits near Albenga. For its centenary Tommaso Spadolini drew the Patrone 100, a gozzo in the style of the sixties. A Patrone shows its gozzo heritage: a round, high bow, a strong sheer and a hull that sits low and steady in the water.

Our model records list 21 designs: eleven motorboats, nine motor yachts and one sailing boat. The oldest entries begin in 2003, and 13 designs reach into the most recent build years. The core of the range is built around the 23, 25, 27, 30, 33, 36 and 42, each in several versions: Open, Diporto, Fisherman, Cabinato, Special, Fly and Convertible. The Patrone 42 comes as Open, Convertible and Fly, all at 13.7 metres, the largest boats of the brand. At the other end are the Patrone Dinghy 12 at 3.7 metres, a small sailing boat, the Sarago and Lampuga at 4.3 metres and the Spigola at 5.2 metres. Eleven designs stay under eight metres, five measure twelve metres or more.

A gozzo is built for the long haul, and many are kept in one family for years. The traditional shape is easy on fuel at displacement speed and comfortable in a short Mediterranean chop. On a used Patrone, ask whether the boat has been laid up ashore in winter, look at the deck joints and the wooden trim, and check that the rubbing strake is sound, since harbour life leaves its marks there. Small boats such as the Spigola or Sarago live on trailers; the trailer's axle and bearings deserve as much attention as the hull. Larger Fly and Convertible versions should have their engine hours and service records on paper.
