Castoldi; cover, cost and conditions
Castoldi is an Italian company based in Albairate, west of Milan, and its name is tied above all to waterjet propulsion. It grew out of two brothers: Luigi Castoldi brought the engineering, Achille the passion for sport, and in the 1930s they built a boat that set a speed record in the class for engines up to 100 hp. Work on a jet drive started in the early sixties, and in 1962 a small series of test units ran on the river Ticino. The first production unit, the Jet 05, was shown at the Genoa Boat Show in February 1969. A year later a 270 hp Castoldi jet runabout won its class in the 400 km Pavia to Venice race at an average of 58.5 knots. Under the hull there is no propeller and no rudder blade.
Our model records contain 18 designs, 13 motorboats and five larger craft classed as motor yachts, all of them with build years from 1983 to 1990. The smallest is the Jet Flash 460 at 4.6 metres, joined by the Scout 490, the D.C. 500 and D.C. 600, the Launch 600, the Sterlet 600 and 820, the G 18 Cabin, the Vector 580 and the Pirogue 770. Six entries are listed outright as workboats: the Pilot 670, the Ranger 750 and 810, the River 630, the Work II S and the LCM 8, which at 22 metres stands far apart from the rest. The Vector 580 Milit. is a military version, and the Winner 900 Taxi C is a nine-metre water taxi. Seventeen of the 18 designs measure nine metres or less, and eleven stay under 6.5 metres.
A waterjet changes what a buyer has to check. The intake grille and the impeller wear when the boat is run over sand or gravel, and a worn impeller shows up as lost thrust at the top end. Steering nozzle, reverse bucket and their linkages should move freely without play. Because every Castoldi in our records is now well over thirty years old, engine, jet unit and hull have often led separate lives, so it pays to ask which parts are original. Workboat versions may have seen hard service. Shallow water is exactly where intake damage tends to start.
