Challenger Boats is a New Zealand name in fibreglass trailer boats. The company was started by boatbuilder Alan McNearney, who worked with naval architect Terry Reid on the hulls. The model that put the brand on the map was the Challenger 520, a small cuddy cabin boat. The range is aimed at families and fishing crews who tow their boat to the ramp and head out along the coast for the day. Hulls are hand laid in GRP with a fine entry and no planing strakes. Production started in Morrinsville and later moved to Fibreglass Developments in Feilding on the North Island.

Our model records list four designs, all of them motorboats: the Challenger 550, 595, 650 and the 720 SD Hard Top. Each one starts with build year 2007, and all four carry on into the most recent build years. Lengths climb in small steps, from 5.5 metres for the 550 through 5.96 and 6.5 metres to 7.2 metres for the 720 SD Hard Top, the only one in the list with a fixed roof over the helm. The model number roughly follows the length in centimetres, and the whole range stays at a size an ordinary road trailer can handle.

A trailer boat lives half its life on the road, so the trailer deserves as much attention as the hull. Check bearings, brakes and rollers before the season, and rinse everything with fresh water after a day in the salt. On a used Challenger, look at the transom around the outboard bolts, the hardtop mounts on the 720 and the condition of the gelcoat where the hull rests on the trailer. Because the boats are often launched and hauled out on busy ramps, small scrapes on the keel line are common and worth a closer look.
