Compass Boats is a family business from Athens. In the late sixties the brothers Dimitris and Markos Samouhos set up a company there to build and trade boats, and their first designs were called the Compass 14 and Compass 15. As output grew, production moved to larger premises in the north of Attica. The yard builds small motorboats, open or with a cabin, from compact runabouts to family boats. You recognise them by their deep freeboard and self-draining decks. The builder designs its sports boats to be unsinkable and resistant to capsize, and moulds hull and deck as one joined unit, which is meant to stiffen the whole boat.

The helm stands in the middle of the boat and you can walk all the way round it to the bow. The Compass 150 CC measures 4.55 metres and the Compass 165 CC 4.98 metres, so both stay under five metres. For the 150 CC the builder recommends outboards between 30 and 60 horsepower, and it seats up to five people. Both fit on an ordinary road trailer.
A small centre console lives a simple life: launched from a ramp, run with an outboard, rinsed and trailered home. The self-draining deck only works if the scuppers stay clear, so leaves and sand should come out after every outing. After use in salt water the outboard deserves a freshwater flush, and the transom around the engine bracket is worth a close look on any used boat. On the trailer, check the wheel bearings, rollers and lights before a long drive. Built-in buoyancy is part of the design, so a hull that seems unusually heavy may hide water in places it should not be.
