Concorde; cover, cost and conditions
Concorde speedboats were built by Dudley Marine of Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire, on the south west coast of Wales, during the seventies and eighties. The business belonged to Lyn Dudley and his wife, who also ran a fishing and watersports shop in the town. The boats are small open planing craft for runs along the coast, water skiing and a bit of fishing. According to owners, the Florida was all but identical to the Fiesta, only a little larger. We have found no reliable record of the founding year or of the construction details, so we leave those out.
Our model records list three motorboats, all with build years from 1977 to 1984. The Concorde Calypso is the smallest at 4.2 metres, the Fiesta measures 4.5 metres and the Florida 5 metres. The whole range therefore stays at or under five metres and is easy to tow behind a car. Steps of about 30 centimetres between models make a small family of boats in three sizes for the same job. None of the three reaches into the most recent build years; in our data production ended in 1984, so every Concorde for sale today is more than forty years old.
A forty year old runabout can still be great fun, but it needs a careful look. Check the transom for soft spots, since water creeping into a wooden core around the engine bolts is the classic problem on small boats of this age. Look for stress cracks in the gelcoat near the bow and along the keel. Old fuel lines, steering cables and wiring are cheap to renew and worth doing straight away. The trailer matters as much as the boat: rollers, bearings, brakes and lights should all be in good order before the first trip to the slipway.
