Constructions Navales Jean Allemand; cover, cost and conditions
The Allemand yard sits at Le Grau d'Agde in the Hérault, where the river meets the Mediterranean. Jean Allemand, a shipwright, founded it in 1947 and began by building wooden boats in a modest workshop on the banks of the Hérault. The family still runs the business, which now builds in polyester. Besides new boats, the yard offers lifting out, dry storage, repairs and work in stainless steel and steel. Its signature boats are the Sapinou, open motorboats available with or without a cabin. The names of the other lines point straight to home: Méditerrannée, Mistral and Languedocien refer to the sea, the wind and the Languedoc coast.
Our model records list 17 motorboats, all built from 2010 onwards, and ten of them reach into the most recent build years. The Sapinou line has five models, from the Sapinou 600 at 6.07 metres to the Sapinou 780 at 7.78 metres, with cabin versions of the 700 and 780 since 2013. Méditerrannée V is the largest line with seven models, from the 820 at 8.2 metres to the 18.00 at 17.9 metres. The 820, 900, 10.60, 11.80 and 12.00 are still current, while the 14.00 and 18.00 are recorded up to 2017. The Mistral V came in four lengths from 7.5 to 10.63 metres until 2017, and the Languedocien 630 at 6.3 metres until 2018.
An open boat like the Sapinou lives an outdoor life, so the gelcoat, the deck hardware and the seat and locker hinges take the brunt of sun and salt. Before buying, look for crazing around fittings, check the steering cables and the drain holes in the cockpit, and ask for the engine service history. The cabin versions add windows and seals to the list. River mouths and harbours on this coast are often shallow, so the hull bottom, the propeller and the skeg are worth a close look for scrapes. On the larger Méditerrannée V models the shafts, cooling systems and onboard electrics deserve the same care as the hull itself.
