Contender Boats; cover, cost and conditions

Contender builds offshore fishing boats in southern Florida; the works stand at Homestead south of Miami. Joe Neber founded the yard in 1984 with a twenty five footer. What it builds are centre console and cabin boats for offshore angling, each to order and with real room for choice in the fitting out. The hull is the signature: a deep vee with around twenty four and a half degrees of deadrise at the transom, drawn to be driven fast in a sea. You recognise the boats by the very high sharp bow and the long straight topsides without decorative lines.

Our model records list 39 Contender models, 25 of them motorboats and 14 motor yachts. Build years start in 2001 and run into current production. Thirty nine series are recorded: the Open 21 and 23; the Sport 22, 24 and 28; the Tournament 23, 25 and 28; the Bay 25; the ST models 30, 32, 35, 39 and 44; the FA models 39 and 44; the 35 Side Console; and the eleven metre Fish-Around. Lengths run from 6.5 to 19.4 metres, half the models between 8.5 and 11.1 metres. The number gives the approximate length in feet.

Deadrise is the number that matters on a boat like this. A flat bottom is stable at rest and brutal at speed in a chop; a deep vee is the opposite, and twenty four and a half degrees at the transom is very deep indeed. It is the choice of someone who intends to leave harbour when the forecast is poor and come home fast.
