Cory Yachts; cover, cost and conditions

Cory Yachts works from Bridge Wharf in Sandwich, a small town in Kent in the south east of England. The story begins with Brian Cory, who built himself an Enterprise dinghy in 1957 and turned the hobby into a business in 1966. His son Simon now runs the yard, with Brian still involved day to day. Over the decades Sandwich has turned out racing dinghies as well as cruising motorboats, and the yard has fitted out fishing boats too. Today it is known for the Invicta range of wheelhouse boats, designed and built in house. The Invicta 295 has high bulwarks, side boarding gates and a walkway around the wheelhouse. The first one delivered carries a 350 hp Nanni diesel on a shaft drive and cruises at around 20 knots.

Our model records list four Cory Yachts designs, all of them motorboats. The oldest is the Invicta 24 at 7.68 metres, recorded for the build years 2007 to 2013. After a gap, three larger boats arrive in 2019 and all of them reach into the most recent build years: the Invicta 295 at 9 metres, the Invicta 315 at 9.6 metres and the Kent 35 at 10.7 metres, the largest boat of the brand. Three of the four designs are therefore current production. The range spans 7.7 to 10.7 metres and sticks to one idea, a wheelhouse motorboat for coastal and open water. Anyone hunting for a used Cory will either find the small Invicta 24 or a very young boat from the newer lines.

A wheelhouse boat with a shaft-driven diesel is simple to live with if the basics are kept up. Check the stern gland, the cutless bearing and the engine mounts at every lift-out, and look at the condition of the wheelhouse windows and their seals, since they take the weather head on. The high bulwarks and side gates make these boats popular with anglers, so look for wear from rod holders, gaffs and heavy boots on the decks. The first Invicta 295 went to Scotland as an offshore fishing boat, the second was prepared for a long cruise in the Baltic, which says a lot about how they are used. On a used Invicta 24, ask for the engine hours and service records.

What this means for the cover

As the Invicta 295, Invicta 315 and Kent 35 by Cory Yachts series are still in production,

parts are available and repair costs are predictable.

Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.

For the Invicta 24 by Cory Yachts series the market value and the replacement cost often differ

widely.

An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.

For the Invicta 295, Invicta 315, Kent 35 by Cory Yachts and further series:

On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part.

Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
