Worth knowing
Costantini; cover, cost and conditions
Chantier Naval Costantini worked out of La Trinité-sur-Mer on the south coast of Brittany. Louis Costantini built up the yard, and in 1957 his sons Gilles and Marc took it over. The name became known through one boat above all: Gilles Costantini drew Pen Duick II, the yard built her in 15 mm plywood, and Éric Tabarly sailed her to victory in the 1964 singlehanded transatlantic race. The yard was known for trying new materials early, plywood, aluminium and plastics, to save weight and building cost. The Vaurien dinghy of 1953 also came from Costantini. The yard no longer exists, but its boats are still sailed and an owners' association looks after them.
Our model records list three Costantini designs, and all three share the same build years, 1967 to 1975. The Biniou is recorded as a sailing boat of 6.9 metres, the smallest of the group. The Triskel measures 8.6 metres; Gilles Costantini designed her with a fin keel. The Super Triskel is the largest at 9.95 metres and is listed as a sailing yacht. None of the lines reaches into recent build years, so any Costantini afloat today is at least half a century old. The names give away where they come from: the biniou is the Breton bagpipe, and the triskel is the Celtic triple spiral seen all over Brittany.
With a yard that worked in plywood, aluminium and plastics, the first job on any used Costantini is to find out what the individual boat is actually made of. Plywood wants a careful look at joints, keel bolts and the areas under fittings, where fresh water can start rot. Old glassfibre needs moisture readings around the deck hardware. Many of these boats are offered in France, often with a long chain of owners, so original drawings, refit invoices and the history of the rig are worth asking for. The Triskel with her fin keel sails quite differently from heavier cruisers of the period and rewards a light hand.

For the Biniou by Costantini series: On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides.
A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
For the Super Triskel, Triskel by Costantini series:
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts:
a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat,
and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
