Worth knowing

David Rose Yachts; cover, cost and conditions

David Rose Yachts is an Australian builder known for small swing keel boats of the kind Australians call trailer sailers. Its best known boat began as a design by John Duncanson, who first built it himself as the Duncanson 18. David Rose took over production and renamed the boat the Careel 18. It is a glassfibre monohull with a swing keel and a fractional sloop rig, raced as a one design class and sailed on weekend cruises alike. The larger Careel 22 was drawn by Joe Adams. Both share the same idea: a keel that lifts almost completely for launching, and a hull that sits on a road trailer.

Our model records list two sailing yachts from David Rose. The Careel 18 measures 5.6 metres and is listed with build years from 1965 to 1992. The Careel 22 reaches 6.93 metres and runs from 1973 to 1996. Neither design reaches the most recent build years, so even the youngest boats are around thirty years old. The Careel 18 came in three versions, Mk I to Mk III, each heavier than the last with more ballast and more headroom; the basic version displaces about 780 kilograms. On the Careel 22 the keel gives roughly five feet of draught when lowered and just over a foot when raised.

On any swing keeler the keel is the first thing to look at. Check the pivot bolt and its bushes for wear, the lifting cable or strop for broken strands and the winch for smooth action, and see whether the keel case shows cracks or weeping. A keel that clunks under way usually has a worn pivot. On boats this age the chainplates, the mast step and the deck around fittings deserve attention too. The trailer matters as much as the boat: rollers, bearings and the winch post take a beating at the ramp. A well kept Careel still races and cruises, and owners can usually tell which Mk they have.
