Degerö Boat Oy; cover, cost and conditions

Degerö is a Finnish yard whose name stands for compact long-keel cruisers. Its first model was the 28 MS, drawn by Risto Kristeri and Seppo Mäkelä, and that boat has stayed in the range ever since. Reviewers describe it as a small cruiser with the advantages of a motor cutter that still sails as a proper yacht. The boats are easy to recognise: a full-length keel, a fixed doghouse that shelters the helm like a roof, and a masthead sloop rig. Hulls are laid up by hand, the deck has a balsa core and the interior is finished in teak. A German company of the same name, Degerö Yachtbau GmbH in Fahrdorf on the Schlei, spent about four years developing the Scangaard 26, a trailerable long keeler with a keel-hung rudder.

Four lines run into the most recent build years: the 28 MS, the 331 DS, the 36 DS and the 38 DS. Several types appear twice because their versions changed over time. The 33 S and the 35 S each have one version up to 2006 and another from 2007, while the 31 DS was listed as a sailing yacht first and as a motor yacht from 2007. Lengths run from 6.4 metres for the Scangaard 21 Classic to twelve metres for the Degerö 37 and 37 DS. The Scangaard 26 Classic at 8.3 metres and the Flying Albatross 871 and Sun Albatross 840 motorboats complete the list.

A long keel changes how a boat is handled and looked after. It tracks well and moves gently in a seaway, but it needs more room when turning in a tight marina, and going astern takes practice. When the boat is lifted out, the keel band and the joint between keel and hull deserve a close look. On older boats the balsa-cored deck should be checked for soft spots around stanchions and fittings, because water that gets into the core spreads quietly. Teak trim needs regular oiling or it turns grey. Many Degerö yachts on the used market date from the nineties, so a buyer should ask for the engine log, the age of the standing rigging and the state of the doghouse windows and their seals.
