Dekker; cover, cost and conditions
Dekker refers to the Dutch yard Jachtwerf F. Dekker en Zonen in Amsterdam, a builder of sailing yachts. In our records its range rests on two families, the Defender and the Marken yachts, plus two smaller sailing boats, the Drifter 25 and the Dezo-Toer. They are classic cruising yachts from the sixties to the eighties. The number after Defender does not always track length: the Defender 15 measures 8.04 metres, the Defender 27 exactly 8 metres and the Defender 18 already 9.6 metres, so length and build year together are the better way to identify one.
Our model records list 12 Dekker designs, 10 sailing yachts and 2 sailing boats. Six belong to the Defender family (15, 18, 27, 32, 33 and 35) and four to the Marken family (Marken I, Marken II, Marken 34 and Marken 37). The Marken I opens the list in 1961; the Defender 27 and 35 close it in 1989. Sizes run from the 6.65 metre Dezo-Toer to the 11.45 metre Marken 37, with all ten yachts between 8 and 11.45 metres.
A Dekker today is an older boat with real character, and condition counts for more than the name. Deck fittings, keel bolts and standing rigging deserve a close look, and a winter ashore under a roof keeps the boat healthy. Many of these yachts sail on shallow Dutch and North Sea waters, where a careful eye on the tide and the depth sounder is part of the routine.
